Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States.  Geographically, the Houston area covers over approximately 1,900 square miles--which is larger than the entire state of Rhode Island.  Houston and the surrounding communities offer a wide variety of life-style opportunities.  There is literally something for everyone.  Come explore and discover the enthusiasm, complexities, and challenges of the Greater Houston area.

Banking:  Houston is a major financial center which features 523 commercial banking establishments, 155 savings and loan offices, 440 credit union sites, and 521 security brokers and dealers.  Fifteen of the nation’s 20 largest publicly traded banks, including all of the top 10, operate full-service branches, commercial loan offices or mortgage departments in the Greater Houston area.

Climate:  Gulf winds have a moderating effect on the tropical climate, resulting in mild winters, beautiful springs and warm summers.  Average temperatures range from 45F to 92 F.  The nearness of the Gulf also results in abundant rainfall.  Except for rare drought periods, average annual rainfall totals approximately 45 inches.  Average relative humidity ranges of 88% at midnight to 60% at noon.  The Houston area averages 19.7 days with low temperatures of 32 degrees or below and 96 days with high temperatures of 90 degrees or more.  The growing season averages 300 days with the normal frostfree period extending from February 14 to December 11.  The normal daily maximum winter is 66 degrees and the summer is 91 degrees.  The annual average precipitation is 46.07 inches.  The prevailing wind is south southeasterly at a mean speed of 7.9 mph.

 Transportation:  City and suburban transportation is furnished by the Metropolitan Transit Authority (METRO), and taxicabs.  Amtrak, Greyhound/Trailways, Kerville furnish intercity passenger service and Texas bus lines.  511 nonlocal truck lines operate in Houston, including special-commodity irregular carriers (e.g., oilfield equipment haulers, tank-truck lines, and household carriers) and common carriers operating daily scheduled service between Houston and other major U.S. cities.  Four major rail systems operate 14 mainline tracks radiating from Houston; two switching lines serve the Industrial area plus the port.  There are 426 miles of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, which extends some 1,300 miles from Brownsville, Texas to St. Mark’s, Florida and parallels the Texas coast.  The main channel is 12 feet deep and 125 feed wide at the bottom. 

 Major Airports: Both passenger and freight airlines use the facilities at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), William P. Hobby (HOU) and Ellington Field (EFD) airports. There are various smaller airports in the greater Houston area those service individual pilots and their planes.  Twenty-three airlines (12 domestic, 11 foreign) fly out of Houston Providing daily nonstop and direct service to 113 domestic and 38 international destinations.  More than 1,700 flights arrive in Houston daily.

 Medical facilities: The Texas Medical Center is located on a 546 acre site adjoining Hermann Park in the southern part of Houston.  The center includes 13 hospitals for patient care, two medical schools, a dental school, a college of pharmacy, a school of nursing and several allied health programs, as well as inpatient/outpatient care, education and training.  Other hospitals can be found in many areas within Houston.

 Restaurants:  Houston has over 6,000 restaurants, many which have won national and international culinary awards.  There is a restaurant for anyone’s budget.  The average Houstonian spends $978 a year dining out which is 7% higher than the statewide average.
