Arts and Museums

The Cultural Affairs Division offers an expansive scope of citywide cultural arts services and programs through its museums, theaters, gallery and arts center as well as offering programs that enable artists and arts groups to provide cultural arts presentations contributing to the city's diverse artistic environment.

 

 
 
 
 
 

  • Dougherty Arts Center houses the 1,800 square foot Julia C. Butridge Gallery, a 150 seat Theatre and the Dougherty Arts School offering specialized arts education programs
  • Jourdan-Bachman Pioneer Farm, an outdoor living history museum which presents the story of rural life Texas in the late 19th century
  • George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center, the first African American neighborhood museum in the state of Texas
  • Elisabet Ney Museum, the former studio of the 19th century portrait sculptor Elisabet Ney (1833-1907)
  • O. Henry Museum, William Sidney Porter's home serving as a museum furnished with artifacts and memorabilia from the author's life in Austin
  • Beverly S. Sheffield Zilker Hillside Theater offering a broad range of performances including dramas, musicals, dance, instrumental and vocal music groups
  • 23rd Street Renaissance Market provides an area for crafts people to sell their work
  • The Umlauf Sculpture Garden, located at 605 Robert E. Lee Rd., displays 130 of Charles Umlauf's sculptures
  • the Art in Public Places program, which uses 1% of budgets for new and remodeled city building and parkland acquisition to commission site-specific artworks, ranging from outdoor sculptures and murals to functional works integrated into architecture
  • Cultural Contracts Office manages and monitors contracts from the Hotel Motel Bed Tax funding program which dedicates 15% of the funds to local artists and arts groups, so they can offer quality programming to Austin's diverse communities
